Watercress by Andrea Wang (illustrated by Jason Chin)

This touching picture book tells the story of a young girl and her family who stop by a ditch at the side of the road to pick watercress. The water in the ditch is cold, there are snails sticking to its muddy roots, and she’s afraid she might be seen by someone passing on the road. Her mother prepares the watercress for supper that night, but girl refuses to eat until her mother shares memories about her life in China as a child. It’s a story about making new memories inspired by the author’s childhood.
