Getting Started with E-Libraries & Overdrive
OverDrive is a free provincial service offered by Headingley Library that lets you borrow eBooks (to read on a Kobo or iPad) and audiobooks (to listen on a portable mp3 device) from its digital collection. Every OverDrive collection is slightly different because each library picks the digital content they want for their collection. Headingley Library’s digital collection is primarily selected by the Provincial Library Services.
All you need to get started with free digital titles from OverDrive is an internet connection, a library card with a username and password assigned by Headingley Library, and a device – such as a laptop, Kobo or other e-reader or an iPad, iPhone or iPod.
1. Find your library
Use the library finder on overdrive.com or in the Libby App to find and open Headingley Library’s Overdrive site.
2. Borrow
Use your username and password to borrow a title. The library staff can set this up for you if you do not already have one. Titles you’ve borrowed will appear on your Checkouts page (under your Account).
3. Enjoy
On your Checkouts page, you’ll find options for enjoying each borrowed title, like:
- Read(read an eBook in your browser – requires internet)
- Listen(listen to an audiobook in your browser – requires internet)
- Download or Add to app (to read or listen on your device without a WiFi connection)

Have you met Libby?
Libby is a new reading app developed as an alternative to Overdrive. It’s free, easy to navigate and very user-friendly and it accesses the same digital catalogue as Overdrive. For more information, click on the link below or visit the library for a demo.
