From The Book’s Preface: I wrote this book because of my concern regarding the resurgence of the
smallpox virus as a clinical entity. After 9/11, the media generated considerable fear that smallpox
could conceivably become an agent of bioterrorism. I started saving newspaper clippings which
reviewed the various ways whereby smallpox could return and become ‘weaponized.’ Lab accidents,
release from permafrost, and viral DNA biosynthesis are all present-day possibilities for the return of
this deadly scourge. Smallpox can now be potentially created in a lab, making the world far more
vulnerable to an epidemic than ever before. Virtually everyone on the planet is currently susceptible to
this infection, with vaccinations lasting only ten years at best. Moreover, relatively few people have
been vaccinated.
